But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, (Jude 20)
This verse changed my life! I received Christ as a young, seven-year-old boy. A few years later, a family friend led me into receiving the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues. To be frank, I saw little to no change in my life when I accepted Christ or received the Spirit. I was a kid who was only interested in sports, watching movies, and having friends.
My life was changed when I read and acted on Jude 20. When I took the admonition in this verse seriously and began praying in the Holy Spirit daily, I was built up spiritually.
What is praying in the Holy Spirit? 1 Corinthians 14:2 says, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” When you pray in other tongues, this scripture teaches that you are speaking to God “in the spirit.” Furthermore, verse 4 says, “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,” so when we pray in tongues, we are praying in the Holy Spirit and are built up spiritually.
Look at the following quotes by powerful apostles of our Lord Jesus:
“I want to talk with the utmost frankness and say to you, that tongues have been the making of my ministry.” – John G. Lake
“There are great possibilities as we yield to the Spirit and speak unto God in quiet hours in our bedrooms. God wants you to be filled with the Holy Ghost so that everything about you shall be charged with the dynamite of heaven….I cannot estimate what I, personally, owe to the Holy Ghost method of spiritual edification.” – Smith Wigglesworth
“I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all.” – Paul, the apostle
Shortly after I began to pray in tongues consistently everyday, my life was transformed. I became more sensitive to the Holy Spirit and to my own conscience. The Bible began to make sense to me and personally applicable. I developed a zeal to see people won to Christ. The desires of Heaven became my desires. Missions became my passion. The call of God on my life became real to me. I could go on and on.
Let me encourage you to exercise your inward man through speaking in tongues. At first, it might seem tedious. You might not see results immediately. A person who exercises at the gym sees good results only after being faithful over a period of time. Your mind might fight you. Your emotions might try to hinder you. Your body might struggle to be in control. But let your spirit be in control and pray in tongues by faith, knowing that Jude 20 is true. Be faithful in it before you see any results. Eventually, you will reap the benefits.
